Conventional internal heating arrangements can experience slow heat-up, thermal deflection, temperature variation, and unnecessary energy consumption during extended production runs. For corrugated carton manufacturers looking to improve thermal response and heating efficiency, quartz glass tube radiant infrared heating provides an alternative approach.
Conventional internal heating arrangements can experience slow heat-up, thermal deflection, temperature variation, and unnecessary energy consumption during extended production runs. For corrugated carton manufacturers looking to improve thermal response and heating efficiency, quartz glass tube radiant infrared heating provides an alternative approach.
The HeatZone Technical Solution
HeatZone designed and deployed a 24.0 kW, 3-phase quartz glass tube radiant heating core assembly specifically engineered for a corrugated roll with a standard 4-inch internal bore.
The system uses direct infrared radiation to transfer heat toward the inner surface of the roll, providing rapid thermal response without requiring major modifications to the existing roll structure.
Engineering Highlights
Direct Bore Insertion — No Major Machinery Alteration
The heating assembly is designed for direct insertion into the roll's internal bore. It uses a wall-floating, 360° radial arrangement of six high-intensity quartz infrared elements, positioned to provide circumferential heating around the internal surface of the roll. This approach allows the heating system to be integrated into the existing roll arrangement while minimizing mechanical modifications.
Rapid Thermal Recovery
Quartz infrared elements provide rapid radiant heat transfer compared with slower conventional heating arrangements. In the HeatZone application, the system was engineered to bring the corrugating roll toward a working temperature of approximately 170°C in under 30 minutes from ambient, subject to operating conditions, roll construction, insulation, and process load. The faster thermal response can help reduce start-up waiting time and improve temperature recovery during production.
Automated Power Management
The heating assembly is integrated with a multi-zone SCR/PID temperature control system. During initial heating, the system can utilize the available 24 kW installed heating capacity to accelerate the temperature ramp-up. Once the target operating temperature is reached, PID control modulates the electrical output according to the actual thermal demand. For the referenced application, the typical holding load was approximately 6–8 kW, rather than continuously operating the full installed 24 kW capacity.
Vibration Damping and Mechanical Rigidity
Industrial corrugation machinery operates under continuous mechanical vibration and thermal cycling. The HeatZone assembly incorporates high-temperature ceramic bushes to support and isolate the quartz heating elements while accommodating machine vibration. A heavy-wall 27 mm stainless-steel central support axle provides mechanical rigidity and helps maintain the heating-element geometry across the approximately 70-inch roll length, reducing the risk of thermal deflection and sag.
Why Quartz Infrared Heating for Corrugation Rolls?
For corrugated board production, the heating system must deliver more than simply high temperature. It must provide controlled, repeatable, and evenly distributed heat.
A properly engineered quartz infrared system offers:
Rapid heating response and direct radiant heat transfer
360° internal heating configuration custom-fitted to the roll
Multi-zone temperature control via integrated PID/SCR controls
Reduced energy consumption by modulating down once target temperature is reached
Vibration-resistant construction engineered for continuous line operations
Note: Actual performance depends on roll diameter, bore size, wall thickness, material, operating temperature, line speed, insulation, and required thermal load. HeatZone sizes each heating assembly according to specific application demands.
