7 Common Questions About Cartridge Heaters – Practical Answers for Pakistani Factories

In plastic processing and moulding factories in Pakistan, cartridge heaters are small but critical components. Wrong selection or poor installation can cause uneven heating, increased cycle time, or heater failure. Here’s a practical guide to the 7 most common questions about cartridge heaters.

1. What is a Cartridge Heater?

A cartridge heater is a cylindrical industrial heater designed to be inserted into drilled holes in moulds, dies, or machine parts. Inside the stainless steel sheath, a resistance coil transfers heat efficiently to the surrounding metal.

Also called: Rod heater, mould heater, plastic machine heater.

2. Where Are Cartridge Heaters Used?

  • Injection moulding machines

  • Blow moulding machines

  • Extrusion dies

  • Hot plates & heating blocks

  • Packaging machines

  • Custom moulds

In Karachi factories (SITE, Korangi, Landhi), these heaters often run 24/7 under dust, vibration, and voltage fluctuations.

3. How to Select the Correct Diameter?

Diameter is the most common mistake.

  • Must fit tightly in the drilled hole

  • Standard diameters: 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm

  • Hole tolerance: +0.02 to +0.05 mm

  • Loose or forced fittings reduce heater life

4. How to Choose the Right Length?

  • Heater should cover 70–90% of the heated depth

  • Avoid short heaters in deep moulds → cold zones & hot spots

  • For long blocks, use multiple heaters instead of one oversized heater

5. Wattage – More Power Isn’t Always Better

  • Watt density (W/cm²) matters more than total wattage

  • Too high → overheating, insulation breakdown, burnout

  • Match wattage to:

    • Material being heated

    • Contact quality

    • Duty cycle

6. Voltage Matching – Avoid Silent Failures

  • Use heater rated for your supply: 110V / 220V / 380V

  • Check voltage stability and controller compatibility

  • Avoid importing heaters without voltage verification

7. Role of Temperature Sensors

  • Heater without proper sensor = incomplete solution

  • Use PT100 or thermocouple near the heating zone

  • Avoid placing sensors too far

  • Correct sensor placement improves heater life & process stability
